The flowering life of a plant varies and accordingly they are given names of annual, biennial or perennial flowers. Annuals are the most adaptable of garden plants but they do not survive more than a year. In contrast, Biennials can live for two years and Perennials for a many more years. Perennials germinate fresh flowers every season but require a lot of maintenance work from your side.

If you want to create a flower garden in your backyard, terrace or patio, you must consider the following points before taking the first step in this regard:
  • Check the quality of soil and prepare it appropriately for the kind of flowers you are planning to grow in your garden by adding manure, fertilizers, compost etc.
  • If your soil is too acidic or too alkaline, you may not be able to plant most of the flowers. However, it can be diluted or even altered using aluminum sulfate for alkaline soil and lime for acid soil.
  • Choose your flower seeds, bulbs or plants carefully when you buy them from nurseries, garden centers or stores. When you are buying a young annual plant, make sure they are healthy and are not in bloom at the time of purchase for better results.
  • You must be aware of the right planting time of a flower along with the methods, tools and techniques you would require for the purpose. For most of the plants, Fall is the appropriate season for plantation. Keeping a Flower Garden Calender will be a good idea for timely execution of plantation.
Your work does not finish after plantation. Contrary to this, it is just the beginning of your flower gardening practices. The flowers will require regular watering, fertilizing, mulching, weeding, deadheading, pruning and so on to keep themselves alive and flourishing year after year.
